Instructors
Mr. Patrick O’Brien Sr. and Mr.
Patrick O’Brien Jr., began training together as white belts in November of 1999
at the Street Defense and Isshin-ryu Combat, Wolf Den Dojo in Detroit Michigan.
It began as a great way to allow a father and son to connect and interact
together, but evolved into a way of life for their family.
Under the guidance of
Master Troy Anthony Chambers (Roku-dan), they trained in the art of Isshin-ryu
Karate with Aiki-jujitsu and combat defense also being incorporated into their
studies. After three double rank promotions, both achieved the rank of Ik-kyu
(brown belt 3rd strip) in January of 2003.
Continuing
their training, both were involved with instructing Karate classes for Master
Chambers, with Patrick Sr. also teaching women’s rape prevention seminars as
well as combat defense seminars that included hand to hand, gun, bat and knife
defensive techniques. With Patrick Jr., still far too young to test for his
black belt at 11 years old, they moved to North Carolina in 2006.
Leaving their Sensei and
school behind, they had the great fortune of finding Sho-dan Mike Cohen of Texas Isshin-ryu Karate
Ki to provide outstanding instruction and motivation. In November of 2009
Master Chambers traveled to North Carolina,
training with and testing Patrick Sr and Jr. for a week. In the end, both had
earned the rank of Sho-Dan.
Still guided by Master Chambers, they presently
attend classes with Sensei Nick Cranford (Yon-dan) of Thomasville North Carolina.
